Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Removal

Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Removal

In the capable and experienced hands of Dr. Jeffrey Brown at Vero VIP Implants & Periodontics, your wisdom teeth extraction will be a highly successful procedure. While Dr. Brown’s expertise is a major part of wisdom teeth removal success, you play a significant role as well. As you recover from wisdom teeth extraction, here’s what you need to know to get the best results.

At Home Immediately After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

When you get home after your wisdom teeth extraction, be sure to keep the gauze in place for about 30 minutes. Replace the used gauze with fresh gauze, and continue with regular gauze changes until bleeding stops. For most patients, bleeding will taper off gradually over the first day or two after the surgery.

Some bleeding is normal, and you may experience some oozing from the surgical site as well. Don’t touch the surgical area in any way, as this can cause fresh bleeding and damage. If bleeding isn’t controlled after repeated gauze changes, please call the Vero VIP Implants & Periodontics office for guidance.

Eating After Wisdom Teeth Removal

After wisdom teeth removal, it’s best to stick with a soft diet for at least a few days. There are plenty of foods to enjoy on a soft diet, including:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Yogurt
  • Pudding
  • Cottage cheese
  • Oatmeal
  • Any type of clear broth
  • Ice cream
  • Well cooked mashed veggies

Any type of hard food — and in fact any food that requires chewing — is best avoided until the pain from the wisdom teeth extraction has passed. Just remember to avoid putting any pressure on your surgical site via chewing. Dr. Brown will give you specific guidelines as to when you can go back to eating regular foods.

Dealing With Pain After Wisdom Teeth Removal

You’ll continue to feel the effects of the anesthesia for at least a few hours after the wisdom teeth extraction, so you’re not likely to have serious pain initially. If you start to experience pain, take your prescription medication right away, making sure to take only the prescribed dosage.

Since pain medications are very strong, it’s best to take them with food (anything on your soft diet will work well.) It’s also important that you take your antibiotic medication on time, and that you finish the prescription completely. Infection can make the pain much worse, so it’s vital that you avoid it by taking antibiotics and keeping the surgical site clean.

Thanks to both the skill of Dr. Brown and the high tech 3D Cone Beam scan, the risk of nerve and tissue damage is greatly minimized during your extraction. Additionally, the 3D Cone Beam scan delivers a highly accurate map of your entire mouth, which means that Dr. Brown can be as precise as possible. This, in turn, allows for the fastest and most comfortable recovery.

Dealing With Nausea After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Nausea can occur due to the anesthesia used during wisdom teeth extraction and the pain medication that you may take after surgery. If you start to experience nausea or if you vomit, avoid eating or taking any medication for around an hour. Drink something like ginger ale or tea to help settle your stomach. When you’re no longer feeling nauseated, you can resume eating your soft diet. Make sure to eat before taking any more medication to avoid a recurrence of nausea.

Rinsing Your Mouth After Wisdom Teeth Removal

For the day of the surgery, you shouldn’t rinse your mouth out or brush your teeth. The following day, Dr. Brown usually recommends starting a regular rinsing regimen. Every 3-4 hours, gently rinse your mouth with a warm salt water mixture to keep the surgical site clean and to encourage healing.
