What is Emdogain?

Emdogain is a carefully created biological dental product that is made up mostly of protein. The proteins that are used to make Emdogain can help the body regrow or regenerate both hard and soft tissue that is found along the root of the teeth.

Advanced stage periodontal disease can destroy the hard and soft tissue of the teeth. The body is unable to successfully regrow that tissue on its own. With the application of Emdogain, the body is “tricked” into regrowing and regenerating the hard and soft tissue of the teeth.

Why Would a Periodontist Recommend Emdogain?

Periodontists recommend the use of Emdogain because it can improve the success rate of your periodontal surgery. When it is used, it can speed up the healing process and even cause the teeth to become stronger and more stable.

A periodontist may also recommend Emdogain as an alternative to a bone graft. Bone grafts are extremely painful and time-consuming surgical procedures. Emdogain can do exactly what a bone graft would do, stabilize your teeth by creating a strong supporting bone structure, without requiring you to go through the lengthy and painful surgical procedure.

How is Emdogain Administered to Patients?

Emdogain is given to patients as part of their periodontal surgery. Periodontal surgery is often the best, and only, way to treat advanced-stage periodontal disease.

During the periodontal surgery, your periodontist will make several small incisions along the gum line. This will open up the area where periodontal disease is present. Once the area is exposed your periodontist will work to properly clean the teeth, remove any tartar deposits, and remove any diseased gum tissue. After the area has been properly cleaned, your periodontist will then apply Emdogain to the root of the teeth.

Emdogain is applied using a syringe. Your periodontist will take the syringe and directly inject the gel-like substance into the root of the teeth. Once the gel has been injected your periodontist will close up the surgical site and the healing process begins.

How Long Does it Take Emdogain to Work?

Emdogain doesn’t work overnight. In fact, it takes several months for the body to start regrowing and regenerating the hard and soft tissue. Estimates vary for how long it takes for it to start working, but it generally doesn’t start working for three to four months.

Once the Emdogain does start to work, it will continue to work with your body for anywhere from a year to three years. Your body will constantly continue to create hard and soft tissue near the root of the teeth. The more tissue that is grown, the stronger your teeth will become.
