Signs You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted

The wisdom teeth are located all the way in the back of your mouth. They are your upper and lower molars. The wisdom teeth usually don’t grow out of the gums until a person is well into the late teenage years. When the wisdom teeth come in, some people experience problems surrounding this area of the gums or even in other parts of the mouth. Those problems can include the following issues:

  • The teeth don’t break through the gums all the way, and part of the gum tissue grows back over the tooth.

  • They don’t come up through the gum at all since there isn’t enough room. That’s when they are considered to be “impacted” or under the surface of the gum.
  • A cyst grows near the gums by the wisdom teeth.
  • You can’t reach the wisdom teeth to effectively clean them.

All of these issues can lead to symptoms that could bother you. They can compromise the quality of your life if you have pain or stiffness in your jaw, bleeding gums, bad breath, difficulty eating without pain, other mouth irritation from the wisdom teeth, any type of infection, or are the cause of overcrowding your other teeth. Overcrowding can lead to the rest of your teeth getting pushed together and looking crooked over time. That’s definitely something you want to avoid which may need you to explore braces or a retainer to correct the uneven tooth line.
